Health Information for Travellers and Medical Assistance
(as at 25 Sept 2009)

* If you feel unwell, please ask for a face mask from IT&CMA and CTW staff at the Registration Counters, Level 22, Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Situation in Thailand
• Although H1N1 has spread in Thailand over the past months, the severity of infection is mostly moderate, with most patients (95%) developing only mild symptoms, and recovering within 5–7 days without any need for hospitalisation.
• Only about 5% of patients develop more symptoms. Symptoms are similar to those of seasonal influenza, including fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, and loss of appetite.
• WHO experts advise that H1N1 is a cause for concern, not panic, and has made no recommendations restricting travel. There are no border closures.
• Delegates are therefore advised to use common-sense measures to protect themselves and reduce the risk of infection.

Measures implemented at Bangkok Convention Centre (BCC) at CentralWorld
• The venue will provide hand-cleaning gel to for disinfecting. The gel is certified by ECO LAB and is a recognised disinfectant throughout Thailand and many other countries.
• The use of the hand disinfectant is encouraged and it is strategically placed at various access points such as at the entrance level of BCC, entrance level of Hotel Lobby and restrooms. For those who use their own transport to the venue, hand-cleaning gels can also be found at entrance booths of parking ticket collection and validation.
• A trained nurse is on stand-by on Level 22 of BCC, daily from 7 am – 6 pm. The nurse is trained to recognise early stage flu symptoms.
• For guests staying at Centara Grand, a doctor is on-call 24hrs and can reach the hotel within 10 minutes.
• BCC also works closely with the Police General Hospital, located in proximity to the venue.
• Bamrungrad Hospital is located within a 1-km radius of BCC where TamiFlu tablets can be dispensed to any individual displaying H1N1 symptoms.

Measures Undertaken In Thailand
• The health service continues to prioritize disease prevention to limit spread of influenza A (H1N1), and has introduced thermal scanning at all entry points, together with isolation and quarantine arrangements.
• An intensive nationwide surveillance system, including prioritization of rapid diagnosis and treatment at all hospitals.
• Wide distribution of masks and hand-cleaning gel throughout the country.
• Major public information campaign to raise awareness and promote the wearing of face masks.
• Distribution of Health Beware Cards, health questionnaire, and advice on self-care to inbound international travellers, by collaboration between public health authorities and the airlines.
• Coordination with travel agencies, hotels and airlines in order to take care and give practical advice to travellers.
• Cleansing of schools and public gathering places.
• Stockpiling of anti-viral medications.
• Thai Airlines international has implemented additional preventive measures including regular deep-clean fumigation with EcoTru 1453 on board flights flown to and from high-risk countries, more thorough disinfection of 36 ‘common touch points’ on all aircraft, and installation of special High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor (TRUE HEPA) air filters on all its aircraft.

What can you do to prevent infection?
For your own well-being and that of the general public, visitors to Thailand are requested to cooperate fully with, and to follow the instructions of the public health authority, both at ports of entry and within the Kingdom. You are also requested to be alert and help keep influenza A (H1N1) at bay by taking care of your own personal hygiene. General precautions include the following:
• Avoid crowded areas; wear a surgical mask to protect others
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
• Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when sneezing or coughing; dispose of tissues properly.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
• Wash hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, and when they are contaminated by respiratory secretions e.g. after sneezing. Use waterless alcohol-based hand gels (containing at least 60 per cent alcohol) when soap is not available and hands are not visibly dirty.
• Consult a doctor if you develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness..
• Defer travel if you feel unwell.
• Practice other good health habits: get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
